GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"

The site was in use by the Craven Cricket Club when Coventry City FC moved here in 1899. The original facilities included a 2,000 seat stand on the south side and it was not until 1910 that a stand was constructed on the north side.

Following their entry into the Football League in 1919, embankments were constructed at the east end, and cover installed over the west end and further improvements were carried out prior to the outbreak of WWII with the building of a new main stand on the south side and the addition of extra terracing at the east end.
The ground saw major reconstruction work during the 1960s with the building of new stands on the north side (the roof of which was replaced twice within twenty years), at the west end and, following the destruction of the main stand by a fire, on the south side. In 1981 seating was installed throughout Highfield Road making it the first all-seated stadium in England (with a capacity of 20,616) but this proved unpopular with the fans and part of the ground eventually reverted to standing accommodation. During the 1990s a new all seat stand was constructed at the east end with a roof linking with a new cover (the third!) over the north stand, the main stand was re-roofed and much of the seating around the ground refurbished. At the end of the 2003/4 season the all-seat capacity was 23,627 and the pitch size was 110 x 75 yards. The club moved out in 2005 and the site was sold for housing.
