GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"

This was the world’s first purpose-built Olympic Stadium when it was constructed for the 1908 event and had a total capacity of 130,000 with 60,000 seats. The first football matches played here were part of the Olympic Games and Queens Park Rangers played some Southern League fixtures here in 1912. The stadium saw a variety of uses including cycling and athletics before greyhound racing was tried in 1927 and it was purchased by the Greyhound Racing Association in 1930.

The new owners had built new covered terracing and reduced the capacity to 80,000 when Queens Park Rangers came here for their second spell, this time with Football League matches, between 1931 and 1932. Although the mainstay for the stadium was greyhound racing and athletics, non-League football clubs including White City, Acton Town, Hammersmith United and the Corinthians briefly used it for home games.
By the time that QPR moved here for their final abortive attempt to establish it as a home venue in 1962/3 the reduced capacity of 60,000 was now totally under cover and there were 11,000 seats. The last football game of any note was the Uruguay v. France World Cup Group A fixture on July 15th, 1966 and this set the record attendance for a football game here of 45,662. The stadium continued to host athletics, greyhound racing and speedway for a while before it finally closed in 1984 and was demolished to make way for offices for the BBC, a car park and small sports ground.
