Sited on a vegetable plot and amidst a maze of railway lines, Millwall FC moved across the River Thames from the North Greenwich Ground to The Den in 1910. The original facilities included a main stand on the south side and embankments around the remainder of the ground.
No major improvements were made prior to the setting of the record attendance of 48,672 at the FA Cup 5th Round tie v. Derby County (2-1) on February 20th, 1937 but within a few years covers had been installed on all three sides of terracing. The ground suffered wholesale destruction during WWII resulting in the post war rebuilding of the terraces and construction of a new main stand roof and the only other improvements undertaken before Millwall moved to The New Den in 1993 consisted of an extension to the main stand, linking with the cover at the east end, and installation of seating in the main stand paddock and part of the north side. The site was subsequently utilised for housing.
The ground is now known as The Old Den, with its replacement being known as the The Den. |
