GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"

Portsmouth FC was formed in 1898 and purchased the site, in use as a market garden, for Ł4,950. The original facilities upon its opening in September 1899 included a seated stand on the south side and a cover on the north. A subsequent addition was a pavilion built on the south side, at the west end, in 1905. Major improvements were made upon joining the Football League in 1920 with the installation of a new 4,000 seat main stand on the south side and, in the years leading up to WWII a new stand was built on the north side and a cover erected at the west end.

Following the end of the war the record attendance of 51,385 was set at the FA Cup 6th Round tie v. Derby County  (2-1) on February 26th, 1949 and Fratton Park hosted the first ever Football League match to be played under floodlights when Newcastle United visited for a Division One fixture (0-2) on February 22nd, 1956. The one major improvement undertaken in this period was the construction of a concrete two-tier stand at the west end but this only survived until 1988 when it was demolished due to the rapid deterioration of the material.
The stadium was refurbished and partially rebuilt during the 1990s with the installation of seats throughout the ground plus an extension to the roof on the north stand and the construction of a new 4,550 seat stand at the west end. The all-seater capacity at the start of season 2007/8 was 20,288 and the pitch size 114 x 72 yards. In 2005 plans were in hand to rotate the ground through 90o and rebuild it but by 2007 the decision had been taken to relocate.

If driving to ground: From the North take the A34 and join the M3 at Winchester and follow it down to Southampton then join the M27 and continue on to the A27. At junction 12, exit onto M275 toward Portsmouth (W)/Sea Port and follow it down and join the A3 on Mile End Road then at the roundabout take the first exit into Church Street then go straight on at the next two roundabouts then after crossing the railway bridge and at the next roundabout take the first exit into Winston Churchill Avenue straight through the next two roundabouts then its first left to Fratton Park. There is a large car park behind the TY Europe Stand, but this is for home supporters only. So it is mostly street parking for away fans. I like to park beside the Old House at Home pub in Locksway Road which is only 6 minute walk to the ground.

If using Public Transport: The nearest local train station is Fratton, which is an eight minute walk away. Portsmouth train station is at least a 22 minute walk away. On arrival at Fratton by train you pass the ground on the left. Fratton station has a footbridge as the only way out. The exit leads into Goldsmith Avenue. Turn left along Goldsmith Avenue and walk about half a mile passing Lidel on the way straight around to a small roundabout. Then go straight on still on Goldsmith Avenue, take the first left into Frogmore and the entrance to the Ty and South stands is 100m ahead. For the Milton End stay on Goldsmith Avenue for another 100m and turn left into Apsley Road. The entrances to the Milton End are 100m ahead. If you go to Portsmouth main Rail station then it’s a 1.4 mile walk to the ground. The come out on to Brunel Square then walk between the high rise and the railway this will lead out onto Dugald Drummond Street at the car park take a right and walk up to the church. Then turn left into Greetham Street walk up the road till you have church in front of you cross over then take a sharp right /left into Carlisle Street at the roundabout take a slight left into Victoria Street walk on till the next roundabout. Walk straight on into Goldsmith Avenue walk up to Fratton Railway Station and follow the above directions.
