GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"

Opened in 1877, the stadium was utilized for cricket, athletics and bicycle racing as well as for football. Generally oval in shape, there was a 100ft long stand and pavilion on the west side and raised banking surrounding the arena.

The ground hosted the FA Cup Semi-Final between Aston Villa and Glasgow Rangers (3-1) on March 5th, 1887 (when the probable ground record attendance of 7,000 was established) and an England v. Wales match on February 4th, 1889. The club left in 1896 and the site is now occupied by Rail House, a car park and part of the current Gresty Road ground.

NB The Football Ground in the south east corner of the map on the Home Teams page is the venue (Gresty Road original) to which the club returned in 1897 and used until 1906 when railway lines were constructed on the west side of the station. The pitch was moved a few yards to the west to the site now also known as Gresty Road.
