GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds" |

Opened on April 28th, 1877 as the running track for the London Athletic Club the ground was sold in 1904 to Mr Gus Mears, who constructed a sports stadium to host cycling and athletics as well as football. A 5,000 seat stand was installed on the east side and a large oval shaped embankment built around the remainder of the ground. Chelsea FC was formed to occupy the ground and following election to the Football League the banking was expanded to raise the nominal capacity to 80,000. Although it was used for a variety of sports the only alterations in this period were the installation of a cover at the south end and a bizarre 2,500 seat stand on stilts in the north east corner.
In 1945 a gate of 74,496 was recorded for the friendly fixture against Moscow Dynamo but this was undoubtedly the largest attendance at the ground as 100,000 were estimated to have gained access, legally or otherwise. The first post war improvement was the construction of a seated stand on the west side in 1965. The stand on the east side was demolished in 1972 with a new three-tier all seat stand opening on the site in 1974 and, in the 1990s, new all seat stands, with suspended roofs were built at each end, corner stands installed and in 2001 the stand on the west side was rebuilt as a two-tier structure giving an all-seat capacity of 42,449 at the start of the 2007/8 season. The pitch size was 113 x 74 yards.
