If there''s a more picturesque setting for a football ground I hope to see it soon. The club first entered football league''s fourth tier in 1999 having won promotion from what was then the Football Conference. They were relegated in 2015 but won promotion immediately in the 2016 season. Whaddon Rd, or the LCI Stadium, as it is also known, is situated just outside the town of Cheltenham and being surrounded by hills, fields and trees could easily be the setting for a cricket match on a sunny Sunday afternoon. A nice compact ground with a mixture of traditional and new styles of stands. The ground has it''s own limited space car park and, due to the fact that it''s in a residential area, street parking is hard to come by too. A car park ticket can be purchased from the club, which is what I did. From the outside Whaddon Rd is very much an old style, some might say, proper, football ground. No fully enclosed arena this. From the small club shop, the very visible tall floodlights in each corner, the turnstiles and the view of the back of the old Main stand this is roots football at its best. The ground is entered via a manned turnstile. No automatic ticket scanners here. Whaddon Rd has four seperate stands with the floodlight pylons taking up the corner spaces. The Hazelwood, or Whaddon Rd Stand, is a single tier, covered all seater situated behind one goal and has a capacity of just over 1000 and is used to house the away fans. The seats are red with white seats spelling out Robins, the clubs nickname. The Colin Farmer, or Wyman''s Rd Stand runs the length of one side of the pitch and again is a single tier covered all seater with a capacity of just over 2000 with wind shields at either. Again the seats are red with white seats spelling out Cheltenham Town. The stand is the same height as the Whaddon Rd stand and although the stands aren''t joined the two roofs do meet, with a floodlight pylon in the space between. Behind the other goal is the LMI, or Prestbury Rd Stand. This is a covered terrace, much smaller than the other stands, with a capacity of of around 2000 and is where the home fans convene and make a great atmosphere. The jewel in the crown, as far as I''m concerned anyway, is the marvellous Jelf Main Stand. This is a throwback to the old days of football. Built in 1963 the Main Stand is a covered, 1800 capacity stand with red seating in the top section, giving fantastic views of the surrounding countryside. The seating section is reached by two sets of red metal steps at either end of the stand. The bottom section of this stand is a small paddock terrace. Sadly not too many of these stands left in the Leagues. Plenty of character and the ground is worth a visit just to sit in there. The stand also houses the dugouts and changing rooms and at the back are the press boxes and executive suites. On the roof of the stand are two tall aerials. Not entirely sure what they''re for or even if they''re in working order, but there they are. The stand straddles the half way line but doesn''t run the length of the pitch with the open 10 or so metres towards the Whaddon Rd end being used to house what I believe to be the security offices and also a fast food outlet, and on the other side is a small uncovered terrace which is actually joined to, and forms part of, the Prestbury Rd terrace. The game saw the Robins end a 6 match winless run with Waters scoring after 3 minutes and Munns doubling the lead just after the hour. The last 10 minutes were a bit of a nailbiter for Cheltenham as Djalo scored to put Crawley back in the game, but the home team held on for the win. Whaddon Rd is well worth a visit. Nice ground, lovely views, very friendly staff and fans and a grand old stand. End of season 16/17- Cheltenham Town eventually finished 21st on 50 points. Crawley finished 19th with 51.
